The 1986 Cherokee was the third model year of the compact XJ, offered as a two or four door in Pioneer, Chief and Laredo trims with AMC engines. American Motors still developed the line, and its replacement was already planned as a larger model that became the Grand Cherokee. The Chief and Pioneer trims were offered from 1984 to 1990, with cloth plaid upholstery and, on the Pioneer, steel wheels and an AM radio.
