The Cherokee appeared for 1974 as a two door variant of the Wagoneer, in the base Model 16 and the top of the line S Model 17, only in the standard narrow track form. The term Sport Utility Vehicle appeared for the first time in the 1974 Cherokee sales brochure. A four door version was not added until 1977. The Cherokee was marketed as the sporty two door variant of Jeep's station wagon, built at Toledo, Ohio, with AMC six cylinder and V8 engines.
