American Motors gave the design of the 1956 Hornet to Richard Arbib, who dressed it in what he called V Line styling, repeating the Hudson triangle across the interior and exterior and offering tri tone paint. The Packard V8 was sold only during the first half of the year, and in mid year a cheaper Hornet Special arrived with an American Motors V8 on a shorter, lighter Statesman or Wasp platform. The look failed to excite buyers, and Hornet sales fell to 8,152 cars, made up of 6,512 sedans and 1,640 Hollywood hardtops.
