The 1963 Honda S500 was the first model year, released in 1963, four months after the T360 truck entered production, and it sold for $1,275 that year. The planned displacement was 492 cc, but the production dual overhead cam straight four displaced 531 cc and made 44 hp at 8000 rpm. At the time of its introduction its dimensions and engine displacement were larger than established kei car regulations, and an optional fiberglass hardtop was also available. Production began in October 1963.
