Honda introduced the Rafaga in October 1993 as a compact 4 door sedan sold only in Japan, with the 5 cylinder engine of the Honda Inspire and Honda Vigor mounted longitudinally. It shared a platform with the second generation CE series Honda Ascot and was sold at Honda Verno dealerships, one level up from the Honda Integra. Honda brought in the Rafaga and the Ascot as its compact sedan for Japan once the Accord grew in size.
