In 1988 the VN Commodore took its bodywork from the larger Opel Senator B and the new Opel Omega A, but this time the floor plan was widened and stretched, now matching the Ford Falcon for size. Prior to the second generation Commodore of 1988 the Holden was positioned a full class below the full size Falcon. The Australian production was consolidated at the Elizabeth plant in 1988. It was the first of the VN to VS second generation.
