Launched in 2006 after General Motors' 2003 abandonment of its last European rear drive sedan, the Opel Omega, the VE is the first Commodore model designed entirely in Australia, as opposed to being based on an adapted European design, with a development budget reported to have exceeded one billion Australian dollars. Internationally the Commodore was again badge engineered as the Chevrolet Lumina and Chevrolet Omega, and as the Pontiac G8 in the United States.
