The Volvo C30 is a three-door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive premium compact hatchback that Volvo Cars made from 2006 to 2013 in a single generation, a variant of the S40, V50 and C70 range sharing their Ford C1 and Volvo P1 platform. Volvo marketed it as a premium hatchback and sports coupe, and its rear styling and frameless glass hatch recall the earlier P1800 ES and Volvo 480. It was previewed by the Volvo SCC safety concept car of 2001, which borrowed the rear hatch design of the P1800ES and the glass hatch of the 480, and by concepts shown at the 2006 SEMA and Essen shows. The C30 launched in Europe in late 2006 with engines from a 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol or diesel to a 2.5 litre five-cylinder turbo, with a 2.4 litre diesel, and later added a six-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic, a 1.8 litre flex-fuel E85 engine and 1.6 litre DRIVe diesels with start-stop, as well as special editions such as the R-Design and the Polestar. About 50 C30 electric cars were trialled in Sweden from the fourth quarter of 2010.
