The Toyota Vitz is a subcompact car that Toyota produced from 1999 to 2019 in three- and five-door hatchback bodies. The Vitz name was used consistently in Japan, while most other markets received the same car as the Toyota Yaris, and Australasia and Canada used the name Echo. It was first unveiled at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, production began in late 1998, the Japanese on-sale date was January 1999 and European sales as the Yaris followed two months later. The Echo and Yaris names were also given to the export version of the related Platz sedan, which was also a coupe in North America. A Yaris Verso or Echo Verso based on the Japanese FunCargo was sold in some export markets, and the Vitz won the Car of the Year Japan Award at its introduction in 1999.
