The first-generation Subaru Outback Sport was introduced in North America for the 1995 model year, derived from the Impreza hatchback as a trim line based on the L Active Safety Group with all-wheel drive and front and rear disc anti-lock brakes. The standard engine was a 1.8 litre EJ18 or a slightly larger 2.2 litre EJ22, both paired to a manual transmission with an automatic optional on the 2.2, and it added a roof rack and mud flaps. Ground clearance stayed at 6.3 inches (160 mm) until the 1997 model year, when larger tyres raised it to 6.4 to 6.5 inches, and the car was priced lower than the Legacy-based Outback and aimed at a younger buyer.
