The Simca 1100 was a series of French compact front-wheel-drive family cars, mainly C-segment hatchbacks but also a compact wagon and popular delivery vans, built by Simca from 1967 through 1982 or 1985. It combined a transverse engine, front-wheel drive, independent suspension all round with torsion bars and anti-roll bars, front disc brakes and rack and pinion steering in an affordable unibody hatchback, and Volkswagen reportedly studied it closely before designing the Golf. Project 928 began in 1962, and the car was shown in 1967 with Simca Type 315 Poissy petrol engines of 944, 1,118 and 1,294 cc. The 1974 Ti, with 82 horsepower and a top speed of 169 kilometres an hour, has a strong claim to be the first hot hatch, and the Matra Simca Rancho was a crossover built on the family. The Simca Talbot Horizon replaced the hatchbacks.
