The MG Maestro was the performance version of the Austin Maestro five-door hatchback, built at Oxford and sold from 1983 until 1991. The original MG Maestro 1600 of March 1983 used a 1.6 litre R-series engine with twin Weber carburettors that ran roughly and was hard to start when warm, and although more than 15,000 were built it was dropped the following year. The car was relaunched in October 1984 as the MG Maestro 2.0 EFi, with a fuel-injected 2.0 litre O-series engine of 115 bhp, a claimed top speed of 115 mph and a 0 to 60 mph time of 8.5 seconds, which gave Austin Rover its first serious rival for the Golf GTI and Escort XR3i. A limited run of 500 turbocharged MG Maestro Turbos followed in 1989, the final car launched by Austin Rover Group.
