The first generation of the Chevrolet Spark began as the Daewoo Matiz, a small city car that Daewoo put into production in South Korea in 1998 and sold in many European markets. It was internally designated the M100, and a facelifted M150 followed from late 2000. The body was based on the Italdesign Lucciola concept of 1993, and the car shared its mechanicals and narrow width with the Daewoo Tico, a licence built Suzuki Alto. The launch engine was a 0.8 litre three cylinder petrol unit derived from the Suzuki F8B, rated at 38 kW with a top speed of 144 km/h. The M150 made room for a four cylinder engine, and the 1.0 litre S-Tec unit arrived after General Motors took over Daewoo in 2002. Production continued in Uzbekistan until 2018, and in China the car was sold as the Chevrolet Lechi.
