The Maxi is the medium sized five door hatchback family car that Austin and later British Leyland produced between 1969 and 1981, launched in Oporto, Portugal, on 24 April 1969 with an all new front wheel drive chassis and an innovative five speed manual gearbox. It was originally to have been called the Austin 1500 on its spring 1969 launch. Its 12 year production run ended on 8 July 1981, and the Austin Maestro replaced it in March 1983. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 2 generations: the Maxi (1969 to 1980); the Maxi 2 (1980 to 1981).
