The production iQ debuted at the Geneva show in March 2008 following a concept shown at the Frankfurt show in 2007, and Japanese sales began in November 2008. In 2008 it was named the Japanese Car of the Year, and early Japanese models had only a 1.0 liter three cylinder engine. This was the first model year of the Toyota iQ (single generation), 2008 to 2016, the first generation covered for the Toyota iQ; the 2009 model year follows it.
