After selling far under sales projections, Ford discontinued the Freestar and Monterey after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America the line was functionally matched by the seven passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon, and in Mexico the Freestar was replaced by the Transit and Tourneo. The 4.2 liter engine was made standard in all vans in the late 2007 model year after the 3.9 liter stopped production.
