The Tempo went on sale on 26 May 1983 as a 1984 model, replacing the Fairmont and becoming Ford's first compact designed with front wheel drive. More than 107,000 two door Tempos and more than 295,000 four door Tempos were sold in the first year. It had a 90 horsepower 2.3 liter HSC four, effectively two thirds of the Fairmont's six adapted for front drive, or a Mazda sourced 2.0 liter diesel, and its windshield was inclined at 60 degrees.
