In 1989 Ford released a new DOHC twin cam engine and showed it off in the Sierra 2.0i 2000E, a limited edition with two tone metallic paint, alloys, light grey leather and a trip computer, built only as a saloon between 1989 and 1991 and named after a Cortina Mark III model. The 2.8 liter Cologne V6 of the XR4x4 was replaced that year by a more efficient 2.9 liter unit with electronic fuel injection. By 1989 Ford had confirmed that the successor would be front wheel drive.
