The Sierra debuted at the 1982 British International Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham and then appeared at the Paris Salon, with sales beginning on 15 October 1982. It replaced the Taunus TC3 and the Cortina Mark V, whose names disappeared after forty three and twenty years. Its aerodynamic styling and the initial absence of a saloon alienated conservative buyers, including company car drivers, and it was built in Belgium and the United Kingdom, and assembled in several other countries.
