The 1979 Mustang moved to the Fox platform, which Ford intended to underpin everything from a sporty coupe to a family sedan and first used on the 1978 Fairmont and Zephyr. It came as a coupe or a three door hatchback in base and Ghia trim. The Cobra appearance package debuted with a black grille and lower body paint, and the Mustang paced the Indianapolis 500, which Ford marked with 10,479 pewter and black Pace Car replicas.
