The Mustang reached showrooms in April 1964, four months ahead of the usual start of the 1965 model year, which is why enthusiasts call the earliest cars 1964½ models although Ford sold them all as 1965 models. The cheapest hardtop carried a 170 cubic inch six taken from the Falcon. When the normal model year began in August 1964 the engines were rearranged, with a 200 cubic inch six of 120 horsepower and a 289 V8 offered in several outputs up to the 271 horsepower K-code. More than 400,000 cars were sold in the first year.
