The mid cycle facelift, launched in October 1996 and known as the Mk II, aimed at three criticisms of the original: bland styling, headlights whose reflectors yellowed, and cramped rear legroom. It left only the doors, the roof and, on the estate, the rear quarter panels unchanged, with a new grille and wraparound lights. The car gained a full size driver airbag in place of the smaller euro bag, and the Mk II earned three stars in Euro NCAP.
