In 1974 the Maverick was unchanged except for new, larger federally required five mile per hour bumpers at the front and rear, which required new rear quarter panel end caps. The increase in demand for smaller cars after the 1973 gas crisis led Ford to keep making the Maverick as an entry level compact, instead of replacing it with the Granada, which it had intended to do for 1975. The Granada was meanwhile being readied as a luxury compact.
