In 2002 the Endura E engine was replaced by the overhead cam Duratec engine, with claims of improved fuel efficiency and increased refinement, mostly caused by taller gearing on the cars without air conditioning. The Australian Ka, which was unsuccessful with fewer than 2,000 sold per year, partly because of the lack of an automatic transmission, left the market that year. It was built on the Fiesta production line at Almussafes in Spain.
