A Ford Ka rally championship was created in 1998, and it proved to be one of the most popular junior rally championships in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Ka Championship of 1997 had just four cars in its debut event, and in 1998 fifteen competitors undertook the Mintex challenge. The Ka was the best selling car in its class in the United Kingdom for a number of years, commanding around a fifth of the city car market.
