Shelby's first win came on its maiden race with the Ford program, when Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby took a Shelby American entered GT40 to victory in the Daytona 2000 km in February 1965. A month later Miles and Bruce McLaren came second overall and first in the prototype class at the Sebring 12 hours, but the rest of the season was a disappointment. At least 50 Mk I cars were made in 1965, which allowed them to be homologated as GT cars.
