Ford's intermediates grew again in 1970, with a 117 inch wheelbase, and the Fairlane became a sub series of the Torino. The Falcon name was transferred from the discontinued compact to a basic, lower trim version of the intermediate platform as a 1970.5 model on 1 January 1970. For 1971 the Falcon and Fairlane 500 names were dropped, though the Fairlane name continued in Australia and in Venezuela through 1978.
