The sixth generation, launched in December 1972 for the 1973 model year, kept the chassis of the previous generation with several revisions. To fight corrosion Ford used more galvanized sheet metal and zinc rich primer, and for safety the fuel tank was moved out of the cab to below the pickup bed. A new heavy duty F-350 V8 was aimed at contractors and campers, on a 140 inch wheelbase, and the regular cab F-350 could for the first time have a wide Styleside bed.
