The fourth generation Explorer for 2006 was marketed as all new though it kept the roofline, body and glass of its predecessor, riding on a new, stiffer frame. A 210 horsepower 4.0 liter V6 was standard with a five speed automatic, and a 292 horsepower 4.6 liter V8 with a new six speed automatic was optional. The 2006 Explorer was nominated for North American Truck of the Year, and the Mercury Mountaineer returned as a sibling for 2006.
