The fifth generation 2011 Explorer featured a unibody structure based on the D4 platform shared with the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, with blacked out A, B and D pillars, sculpted bodywork and stepped headlamps and taillamps. Ford presented it via Facebook on 26 July 2010, and assembly at the Chicago plant began on 1 December 2010. The Mercury Mountaineer was dropped, as Mercury was dissolved in 2011.
