The Mark V Escort and its Orion saloon sibling arrived in September 1990 on an all new bodyshell with simpler torsion beam rear suspension, and a drag coefficient of 0.35 that was a real improvement. It started life with the engines of the old model, the 1.3 HCS, 1.4 and 1.6 CVH petrols and a 1.8 diesel. The previous model had just had improved equipment, with sunroofs on all but the Popular, and catalytic converters offered on the 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines.
