The fourth version of the Escort arrived in March 1986 as a heavy update of the Mark III rather than a new car, and inside Ford it carried the codename Erika-86. A smooth nose took its look from the Scorpio and Granada, the rear lamps were smoothed over and the cabin received a new dashboard, switchgear and instruments. It faced fresh rivals such as the new Opel Kadett and Golf Mark II and the Peugeot 309. Its model years run from 1986 to 1989, with European production finishing in 1990.
