In 1987 Ford added an LX trim level between the L and GL, and widened the commercial range with the Combi, a sedan delivery model built on the three door estate body with the rear windows filled in and no back seat, sitting below the existing vans. The Escort went on selling strongly through the decade, being assembled at Halewood, Saarlouis and, later in the 1980s, at the Valencia plant that had been set up for the Fiesta.
