The Escort that Ford regarded as a Mark III facelift, and the public as the Mark IV, was launched in March 1986. It had a smoother nose borrowed from the Scorpio and Granada, a redesigned dashboard, switchgear and instruments, and rear lamps that had lost their strakes. These changes came at a time of strong new rivals: the Opel Kadett had been replaced in 1984, the Golf Mark II had arrived and Peugeot had just started selling its British built 309.
