A further cosmetic update arrived in 1978. The L models gained the square headlights that had previously been reserved for GL and Ghia cars, most models other than the RS received a new steering wheel, and the horizontal chrome strip across the grille was removed, with a wider front track underneath. Ford Australia the same year standardised the blue oval badge across its Escort range and introduced the Sundowner panel van, aimed at young buyers as a lifestyle vehicle.
