By 1971 the Escort was in production at Halewood, Saarlouis and in Australia, where the twin cam model was renamed the Escort GT 1600 in the last months of the year. The performance range also included the RS1600 with its 1,601 cc Cosworth BDA 16 valve head, and about a hundred of these were sent as knock down kits to Ford's Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa in 1970 and 1971. Many RS1600 and Mexico cars were built at the Aveley plant in Essex.
