The Mark III Cortina went on sale on 23 October 1970, the first of the Cortinas built after Ford of Britain and Ford of Germany merged into Ford of Europe, on a platform almost identical to the German Taunus. It looked larger than the Mark II but had the same overall length, being four inches wider, with a wheelbase more than three inches longer. It replaced both the Mark II and the larger Corsair, and it offered Base, L, XL, GT and GXL trims.
