For the 1982 model year the Essex 3.0 liter V6 which had been the range topper since September 1969 was dropped, mostly because of tighter emission regulations. A new sports version, the 2.8 Injection, debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, the first regular model since the RS2600 to use fuel injection, with a claimed 160 PS. It breathed new life into the range and kept the car in production two or three years longer than Ford had planned.
