In 1973, in response to buyer demand, a three speed automatic transmission was offered as an option on the Bronco, which had been sold since launch only with a three speed manual with a column shifter to lower production costs. The wagon was the only body style now. The first generation Bronco was by then competing against the Chevrolet Blazer, Jeep Cherokee and International Scout II. The Bronco kept its 92 inch wheelbase and four wheel drive as standard.
