During the 1990 model year Ford introduced an all wheel drive system for the Aerostar, called E 4WD, developed specifically for the model line and offered from 1990 to 1997 on XLT and Eddie Bauer trims. A 160 horsepower 4.0 liter V6 was introduced that year, paired with the all wheel drive system and optional on higher trim rear wheel drive vehicles. Following 1997, Ford offered no all wheel drive vans until the 2020 Transit.
