As a response to the Dodge Grand Caravan and Plymouth Grand Voyager, Ford released an unnamed extended length version of the Aerostar for 1989. The exterior was updated for the first time, with the chrome grille replaced by a black grille and the bracketed towing mirrors by power mirrors, and after 1989 the Eddie Bauer package came with the 4.0 liter V6, though buyers could choose between rear wheel drive and all wheel drive.
