The MX-5 was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on 10 February 1989, with a price tag of 14,000 dollars. It was made available for delivery in Japan on 1 September 1989, as the Eunos Roadster, and in May 1989 as a 1990 model in the US and Canada. The first generation sold 228,961 units between 1989 and 1997. The MX-5 was inspired by the post war British sports cars and rejuvenated interest in roadsters. Since its debut the MX-5 has won numerous automotive awards and has become the world's best selling sports car.
