The Presso of 1997 was in its seventh year, a Japanese hatchback coupe with a V6 engine and an E platform chassis, sold at the Mazda Efini stores. Its rear window was curved in three dimensions, and the car looked like a smaller RX-7, which was sold by another channel of Mazda at the time. It was a short lived model, to end in 1998, with the Roadster as its virtual replacement. The Presso was said at its announcement to be the smallest V6 engined car in the world, until Mitsubishi put a 1.6 liter V6 in the Lancer and the Mirage.
