The Subaru R1e was a battery-electric microcar produced by Fuji Heavy Industries, first shown at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show and developed to prototype form with the utility Tokyo Electric Power, known as TEPCO. At least 40 prototypes were built and tested by TEPCO and the New York Power Authority, with a range of 80 kilometres and a top speed of 100 km/h. It used a laminated lithium-ion battery from NEC Lamilion Energy, while the related R1 that entered production for 2005 was a conventionally powered gasoline car sharing its styling and chassis. Subaru followed the R1e with the G4e concept in 2007.
