The Viper went on sale in January 1992 as the RT/10 roadster, after the first prototype had been tested in January 1989 and two pre production cars paced the 1991 Indianapolis 500 in place of the Japanese built Dodge Stealth, because of complaints from the United Auto Workers. It sold for $52,000 and sparked immediate interest in the Dodge brand. Production began at the New Mack Assembly Plant, and the 8.0 liter V10 gave 400 horsepower with no traction control or anti lock brakes.
