A driver airbag was added as standard equipment in 1990. The Spirit was a midsize four door sedan that grew in size over its Aries predecessor to allow for increased passenger space, with both turbocharged four cylinder and V6 engines optional. It featured a solid beam rear axle and a MacPherson strut front suspension, and differed from the other A bodies primarily in the grille and rear lamp styling.
