The Monza A1 was the first series of the Opel Monza, an executive fastback coupe planned as the successor to the Commodore Coupé. Work began in 1976 and the first Monzas were available to buy in 1978. It was meant to compete with large luxury coupés such as the Mercedes-Benz C123 and the BMW 6 Series E24, with plenty of space and upmarket seats, while much of the interior was borrowed from the Rekord E1, including cloth seats, plastic dashboard parts and the rev counter. The model had some gearbox problems. The engine range included the 3.0S, the 2.8S, the newly developed 3.0E and later the 2.5E, and the A1 ran until the 1982 facelift.
