The Aston Martin DB9 is a two-door grand tourer that the British carmaker Aston Martin produced at Gaydon, Warwickshire, as a coupé from 2004 and a convertible called the Volante from 2005, until their discontinuation in 2016. It succeeded the DB7 and was designed by Ian Callum and Henrik Fisker, debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003, with the Volante following at the Detroit Auto Show the next year. It was developed while the Ford Motor Company owned Aston Martin, which invested in engine and structural technologies and an entirely new platform and in July 2000 appointed Ulrich Bez as chief executive officer and chairman, and it is built on Aston Martin's vertical/horizontal platform with extensive use of lightweight aluminium and composite materials. The company did not call it the DB8 for fear that the name would suggest a V8 engine, because the DB9 has a V12. Updates in 2008, 2010 and 2012 changed the lights, engine and interior and finally the front fascia, Aston Martin Racing adapted it as the DBR9 and DBRS9 racers, and special editions included the DB9 LM, the DB9 GT and the DB9 Zagato Spyder Centennial.
