The first convertibles were introduced with the new body design of the 1940 models, and the C26 series was the first New Yorker to be considered a standalone model rather than an Imperial version. It introduced Fluid Drive, a fluid coupling between the engine and the clutch, with an independent front coil suspension and a beam rear axle and only the three speed manual transmission. A New Yorker Highlander with tartan seats was offered, sharing its interior treatment with the Windsor Highlander.
