In 1981 the Suburban line underwent a more substantial revision than the minor revisions of 1975, 1977 and 1980, followed by updates in 1983 and 1985. In 1981 GMC replaced the Custom trim with Sierra. The Estate option package, a rare variant offering woodgrain exterior trim in line with sedan based wagons, had been offered through the 1979 model year. The Estate option with woodgrain trim had ended after the 1979 model year, and bucket front seats had been a front seat option since 1978.
